The Medium is the Message

Well, after the lecture I was completely puzzled with what I had just experienced. After reading up on some articles and watching youtube videos, I think I have a bit of an idea of what “the medium is the message” means.

“The medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium – that is, of any extension of ourselves – result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.”

Marshall McLuhan

The whole idea is that the medium has a far greater impact than any message we send through that medium. Technology is changing our world so rapidly, and in turn, altering the way we communicate as a society. Twenty years ago nobody would have believed me if I said to them that we would one day be able to have a face-to-face conversation with someone on the other side of the world. But now we, as a society so heavily dependant on technology, find it hard to imagine life without FaceTime or Skype – or social media as a whole. It is the fact that social media exists that has a far greater impact on us than any message we deliver using social media.

I really like the gif remediation that you created! It is interesting to think about how no one would have ever thought 20 or so years ago that communication with individuals around the world could become so easy, and how the medium itself has a greater impact on the world than the messages we deliver through it. Your gif is my reaction to both finally understanding the term ‘the Medium is in the Message,’ and the message that you communicated in your blog post. In my blog I also focused a lot on the evolution of technology and it’s impact of communication in our society if you wanted to check that out. I took a lot of interesting points from
Mcluhan’s chapter 1 which you can check out here if you wanted to:
    Great stuff!

It still boggles my mind how rapidly technology has evolved. I’m really looking forward to reading your blog as I find these so interesting to gain different perspectives of the topic. And thank you so much for that reference, I’ll definitely check it out!
